The Fort Totten neighborhood and park are located in the Northwest quadrant of Washington DC. It’s outlined north by Riggs Rd. NE, east by Red Line Metro tracks, south by Hawaii Ave. NE, and west by North Capitol St. NE. The name honors General Joseph Gilbert Totten, who was a pre-Civil War Chief Engineer of the US Army, Smithsonian Institution regent, and co-founder of the National Academy of Sciences. During the Civil War, the namesake fort was constructed from 1861 to 1863 to protect Washington from Confederate forces. Remnants of the fort are still present today in Fort Totten Park, which is now an open and forested green space maintained by the National Park Service. The neighborhood is serviced by the Fort Totten Metro station and several Metro bus stops.
This relatively small and historically close-knit community is limited on housing, but new mixed-use developments are under way. Current dwellings that stand on its tree-lined streets are primarily brick duplexes and row-houses built in the 1950s. Many residents have lived here for decades, and have cultivated and maintained neighborly camaraderie. Available single-family housing is reasonably priced, but inventory is scarce.
Much development is poised to arrive in Ft. Totten, along with a flood of new Buyers looking for an affordable metro accessible neighborhood. The Fort Totten Square and Art Place at Fort Totten developments are highly anticipated projects which are sure to dramatically transform the area. Fort Totten Square will include nearly 350 rental units, an urban-format Walmart, and many additional commercial businesses. The Art Place at Fort Totten is a 4-building enterprise that will include 826 residential units, a senior center, parking spaces, numerous retailers, and a children’s museum. These new additions are certain to increase available area housing, raise the neighborhood’s desirability, and subsequently increase property value.
